Rules and format of IPL 2023: The upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season promises to be an exciting affair for cricket enthusiasts as it returns to a home-and-away format. With a total of 10 teams participating, the season is set to feature 74 matches played across various venues.
The tournament structure will comprise a group stage followed by playoffs, similar to the format used in 2019. The last three IPL seasons had to make several modifications due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to restore the popular format this year.
During the last three seasons, the IPL was held in limited venues. In 2022, it was hosted in Mumbai and Pune while in 2021, it started in select Indian cities before shifting to the UAE. The entire 2020 IPL was played in the UAE.
The previous edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) witnessed an exhilarating tournament that was played across six different venues – Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad. The league stage matches were hosted at three venues in Mumbai and one in Pune, while the playoffs took place in Kolkata and Ahmedabad. This diverse range of venues ensured that teams had to adapt to varying playing conditions and cope with the challenges of playing in different cities.
The IPL 2022 final, which took place at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, broke all records by setting a new Guinness World Record for the highest attendance at a T20 match. The match was an enthralling affair that saw the two best teams of the tournament, battle it out in front of a massive crowd of cricket enthusiasts. The electric atmosphere created by the fans in the stadium further added to the intensity of the game, making it an unforgettable experience for all.
As the IPL 2023 season approaches, cricket fans are eagerly waiting for the tournament to kick off. The new format that has been introduced this year, where each team will play seven games at their home ground and seven games at their opponent’s home ground, is set to bring a new level of excitement to the tournament.
This format will not only test the skills of the players but also their adaptability as they will have to perform well in unfamiliar conditions. It will also be a great opportunity for fans to watch their favorite teams play in different cities and stadiums, making the tournament a truly national event.

New Rules in the upcoming IPL 2023:
IPL 2023 is set to introduce a new rule called the “Impact Player Rule”
This is a significant change in the history of the tournament. This rule aims to recognize players who make a significant contribution to the game, even if their performance isn’t reflected in traditional statistics like runs and wickets.
The rule will take into account factors like the number of dot balls faced by a batsman, the number of runs saved by a fielder, and the impact of a bowler’s maiden over.
Apart from the Impact Player Rule, there are some other changes as well. The IPL 2023 season will feature two reviews for each inning, with players being able to take reviews for wides and no-balls. There is also a change in the dismissal rule.
After a catch dismissal, the incoming batsman will take the strike, regardless of whether the batsmen have crossed or not, except if it’s the last ball of the over.
BCCI has a contingency plan for IPL 2023 due to COVID-19 disruptions. If a team cannot field their playing XI, BCCI will try to reschedule the game. If it’s not possible, the IPL Technical Team will decide.
In the playoffs/final, if a super over or subsequent super overs can’t be completed due to some reason, the team that has finished higher in the league will be declared the winner. All these changes promise to make IPL 2023 an even more thrilling and unpredictable tournament than ever before.
